A tomato-picking robot developed by researchers from China Agricultural University (CAU) was a highlight at the 2023 China (Hainan) International Agricultural Hi-Tech Fair held from April 12 to 16 in Haikou, Hainan province.

The robot, which was able to pick tomatoes efficiently and with minimal damage to the fruit, was among numerous innovative agricultural technologies displayed at the fair.

“It is equipped with an advanced visual recognition system and robotic arm to accurately identify ripe tomatoes and harvest them with minimal damage,” explained a researcher from the CAU team.

The team has been developing the robot for several years and believes that it has the potential to revolutionize tomato harvesting.

This robot, standing out with its capabilities in precision harvesting, was just one of many impressive technologies showcased at the fair, which focused on promoting advancements in agricultural production, processing, and management.

The fair attracted exhibitors from China and abroad, presenting their latest innovations in areas such as precision agriculture, agricultural machinery, plant biotechnology, and food safety.

Other highlights included:

  • High-precision planting robots capable of precisely placing seeds and optimizing fertilizer application.
  • Agricultural drones designed for aerial crop monitoring, pest control, and targeted fertilization.
  • Innovative greenhouse technologies aimed at maximizing crop yields and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Smart farming solutions, integrating sensor networks, data analytics, and AI for real-time crop management.

The fair also featured a series of forums and workshops, providing a platform for industry experts and policymakers to exchange insights on the latest developments in agricultural technology.

“The adoption of advanced technologies is crucial for boosting agricultural productivity and addressing food security challenges,” said Li Zhaoxing, deputy director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. “China is committed to fostering innovation and collaboration in the agricultural sector, and the fair plays a significant role in accelerating this process.”

The China (Hainan) International Agricultural Hi-Tech Fair has become a prominent platform for showcasing agricultural innovation and attracting investment in the sector. With a growing focus on sustainability, digitalization, and automation, the event serves as a testament to China’s efforts to modernize its agricultural industry and ensure food security for its burgeoning population.
