Sega is Delisting Sonic Generations, but Doing it in a Good Way

Sega’s delisting Sonic Generations, but somehow doing it in a good way – Polygon

Sega is delisting Sonic Generations from digital storefronts, but they’re making sure it goes out on a high note by offering the game to those who already own it, free of charge, for as long as they want.

A press release explains that, starting May 31, 2023, Sonic Generations will no longer be available for purchase. This impacts the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of the game, which is a bummer considering Generations is considered one of the better Sonic games from the modern era.

But the delisting isn’t exactly a total bummer. Instead of removing access for people who own it, Sega will make Generations available for free, starting today, on their own platform: Sega’s Free Games Program. The move aims to preserve the game for as many players as possible — although a free service likely means people have to install a Sega account for it.

“As you know, Sonic Generations was a fan favorite upon its release, and we’ve been working hard to provide access to as many players as possible in celebration of Sonic’s 30th Anniversary,” Sega explained in their press release. “With that being said, it is with a heavy heart that we must announce that the purchase of Sonic Generations across all platforms will be discontinued on May 31st, 2023.”

The game launched for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in 2011. For years, it’s been regarded as a beloved throwback for fans who missed the 2D days of Sonic and felt the series’ attempts at 3D needed more refining. Sonic Generations offered a strong balance of 2D and 3D platforming while simultaneously serving as a 15-year celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog. It also contained a bunch of playable characters, different stages, and a host of extra secrets.

If you’ve always wanted to play Sonic Generations and haven’t yet, get your copy quickly before the game is delisted and before you can’t get it free anymore.
