MG 4 base price going up, will still be cheapest EV in Australia
The MG 4, Australia’s cheapest electric vehicle, is about to get more expensive. MG has confirmed the base price for the entry-level model, the Standard, is increasing from $39,990 to $40,990 drive-away. However, even with the price hike, the MG 4 Standard remains the most affordable electric car in Australia.
MG Australia’s General Manager of Marketing and Sales, Michael Cooney, said the price increase is due to “a range of factors including rising manufacturing costs and the ongoing global chip shortage.” Despite this, Cooney said the brand is committed to keeping the MG 4 a “highly affordable EV option for Australian customers.”
While the base price is rising, the higher-spec versions of the MG 4 will stay at their current price points. This means that the Comfort, Luxury and Extreme variants are still available from $45,990, $48,990 and $52,990 respectively.
The MG 4 has been a major success in Australia since its launch last year, capturing the attention of budget-conscious buyers seeking a compelling alternative to traditional petrol-powered vehicles. Despite being a relatively new entrant in the EV market, MG has made a significant impact by offering affordable and practical EVs with strong range and competitive features.
While the price hike may slightly dampen the enthusiasm for the MG 4, it is expected to remain a popular choice due to its combination of affordability and practical attributes. The electric hatchback offers a spacious and comfortable cabin, a good range and ample cargo space, all packaged in a stylish and modern design. The MG 4’s 51 kWh battery provides a claimed range of up to 350 km on a single charge, sufficient for daily commutes and occasional longer trips.
With a price still starting under $41,000, the MG 4 Standard remains a compelling choice for budget-conscious Australians looking for a stylish and practical EV. Even though the price has increased, the MG 4 remains the most affordable electric car on sale in Australia. This fact, coupled with its competitive features and attractive design, positions the MG 4 as a leading contender in the growing electric vehicle market.
