Coleman scores 2, Vladar gets 3rd career shutout as Flames beat Devils 3-0

CALGARY – Tyler Toffoli scored a goal and set up another, and Dan Vladar stopped all 28 shots for his third career shutout as the Calgary Flames beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Elias Lindholm and Blake Coleman also scored for the Flames, who have won four of their last five games. Vladar has back-to-back shutouts for Calgary after blanking the Nashville Predators 4-0 on Sunday.

The Devils have lost three in a row after starting their season 8-1-1.

Toffoli opened the scoring at 8:40 of the first period. From behind the net, he chipped the puck through to Lindholm who redirected it in front of Vitek Vanecek. Lindholm snapped a five-game scoreless streak with the goal, his 5th of the season.

Coleman added a power-play goal midway through the second period.

Toffoli carried the puck into the New Jersey zone, before passing across the crease to Coleman, who scored from a sharp angle, his 6th of the season.

After Lindholm gave away the puck in the neutral zone, Coleman swiped the puck back on a 2-on-1 break and went to the net before passing it to Lindholm. Lindholm appeared to attempt a shot, but missed. Vanecek then covered the loose puck but with his stick instead of his glove. Coleman put it into an empty net as the Devils challenged the goal due to the puck appearing to go into the net when the puck was covered with his stick.

Officials determined the goal should stand. The referees did not say there was no evidence the puck crossed the line, nor did they say it was a goaltender interference penalty.

Calgary had 29 shots on goal in the game.

Notes: The game was the first between the Flames and Devils since March 1, 2017. The two teams are in the opposite conferences.

Vanecek had 26 saves for the Devils, including a stellar backhand save on a shorthanded opportunity by Blake Coleman.

Up Next: Calgary will face off against the Florida Panthers on Friday night at home. New Jersey will play the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night at home.
