Popular Darlington tapas bar announces closure after 13 years in town centre

A popular tapas bar in Darlington has announced its closure after 13 years in the town centre.

Tapas on the Corner, located on Bondgate, announced its closure in a social media post on Tuesday, saying the decision had been made “with a heavy heart.”

“After 13 years of serving the people of Darlington some of the finest Spanish cuisine, we’re saddened to announce we are closing our doors,” the post said.

“This decision has not been taken lightly and has been made with a heavy heart. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their loyal support over the years.”

The post added that the restaurant would be “open until further notice,” with plans for a “going out party” in the near future.

The closure comes as a blow to the Darlington town centre, which has faced challenges in recent years. Many businesses have closed in recent years, with some citing rising costs, lack of footfall, and competition from online retailers as reasons for their closures.

The announcement has prompted many local residents to share their sadness at the closure, with many expressing their appreciation for the bar’s food and atmosphere.

“So sad to hear this. Such a great restaurant,” one person commented on the Facebook post. “The tapas was fantastic and the staff always so friendly.”

Another commenter said: “A real shame to see this go. Always enjoyed the food and the friendly atmosphere.”

Tapas on the Corner’s closure is the latest in a series of closures in the Darlington town centre. In recent months, several shops and restaurants have shut down, raising concerns about the future of the town centre.

The closure is a sign of the challenges faced by many businesses in the hospitality sector. Rising costs, labour shortages, and increased competition from online food delivery services have put pressure on many businesses.

The closure of Tapas on the Corner is a loss for the Darlington town centre and for the many customers who enjoyed its food and atmosphere.
