Coffee, Juice, and Pop Linked to Stroke Risk: Heart and Stroke Foundation Advice

New study says coffee, juice and pop could increase risk of stroke. Here’s what the Heart and Stroke Foundation says you can do now to lower your risk

A new study published in the journal “Stroke” has found that consuming sugary drinks like coffee, juice and pop may increase the risk of stroke. The study followed over 100,000 participants for over 12 years and found that those who consumed sugary drinks regularly were more likely to experience a stroke than those who did not. The study also found that the risk of stroke increased with the amount of sugary drinks consumed. While the study’s findings are concerning, it’s important to note that it is observational, meaning that it cannot prove cause and effect. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Dr. Peter Liu, President of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, says that the findings are significant because they provide further evidence that sugary drinks can have a negative impact on health. “This study is a reminder that our diet can play a big role in our overall health,” said Dr. Liu. “We know that sugary drinks are high in calories and can contribute to weight gain, which is a known risk factor for stroke.” He also emphasized that the risk of stroke is dependent on many factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and underlying health conditions.

The study suggests that limiting intake of sugary drinks could help to lower the risk of stroke. Dr. Liu advises making gradual changes to your diet. “Start by reducing the amount of sugary drinks you consume each day,” he says. “You can replace soda with water, unsweetened tea, or low-fat milk. And remember, moderation is key.”
