Asteroid Alert! 170-ft Aeroplane-sized Space Rock Coming Towards Earth On THIS Date: Check What NASA Said

NASA has confirmed that the celestial object, designated as 2023 BU, will zoom past our planet on January 26, 2023. Measuring an impressive 170 feet in diameter, roughly the size of a commercial airplane, this space rock is set to come within a distance of just 3,600 kilometers (2,237 miles) from the Earth’s surface.

While this might sound alarming, NASA has assured that there is absolutely no reason to panic. The trajectory of the asteroid has been calculated meticulously by their scientists, and they have concluded that it poses no threat of collision. 2023 BU will pass us safely, a celestial dance showcasing the vastness of space and the delicate dance of celestial objects.

The discovery of 2023 BU was made by Gennady Borisov, a renowned amateur astronomer based in Crimea, Ukraine, using the MARGO observatory. Borisov is no stranger to astronomical discoveries, having previously found Comet Borisov in 2019, a comet originating from outside our solar system, marking it as the first interstellar comet ever discovered.

“I was very surprised by its very close approach to Earth, but that does not mean that this encounter is very unusual for near-Earth objects,” Borisov remarked about his recent discovery. The astronomer shared his findings with the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center (MPC) on January 21, and the data was swiftly incorporated into NASA’s database of known near-Earth objects (NEOs).

“I don’t want people to get the impression that there’s some risk or there’s some need to be panicked,” said Dr. Paul Chodas, director of NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. Chodas also stated that even if the asteroid were to deviate from its projected trajectory and make an unlikely collision, its size is such that it would likely break up high in the atmosphere, causing only a bright meteor event with few if any falling fragments.

2023 BU’s close encounter presents a unique opportunity for scientists to study the composition and behavior of an asteroid from such a close distance. This near miss will offer invaluable data for our understanding of NEOs and for further refining the technology used for their prediction and, if necessary, future mitigation.
