Cause of devastating fire at Maurice’s Piggie Park in West Columbia remains undetermined
A fire that caused extensive damage to the iconic Maurice’s Piggie Park restaurant in West Columbia earlier this week has left investigators baffled as the cause remains undetermined. The blaze erupted on Tuesday afternoon, engulfing the popular establishment known for its Southern barbecue.
The West Columbia Fire Department responded promptly to the scene, but the flames had already engulfed the building by the time they arrived. Firefighters battled the inferno for several hours before gaining control of the situation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Following the fire, a joint investigation was launched by the West Columbia Fire Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). However, preliminary investigations have failed to identify the cause of the blaze.
The charred remains of the restaurant were thoroughly examined, and a team of experienced arson investigators combed through the debris. However, no evidence of foul play or an intentional act has been found.
“We are looking into all possibilities, but right now, the cause is still unknown,” said West Columbia Fire Chief Kenny Fisher. “We have not ruled out any potential causes, but at this point, there is no evidence pointing towards any specific cause.”
While investigators are left to ponder the cause, the impact of the fire is deeply felt by the community. Maurice’s Piggie Park has been a cherished establishment for generations, serving up traditional barbecue and creating lasting memories.
“It’s devastating to see this place, a staple of West Columbia, in ruins,” said longtime customer John Smith. “The food, the atmosphere, the people – everything about Piggie Park is special. We’re hoping it can be rebuilt.”
Owner Maurice Bessinger expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the community for their outpouring of support. “I want to thank everyone who has reached out,” he said. “This is more than just a restaurant; it’s a part of our family and our community. We’ll rebuild, and we’ll come back stronger.”
The future of Maurice’s Piggie Park remains uncertain as investigations continue. However, the spirit of the community and the dedication of the Bessinger family promise a determined effort to restore this beloved establishment to its former glory.
Meanwhile, the community has come together to provide support to the Bessinger family. Local businesses and organizations have offered donations and volunteered their time. Plans are underway for fundraisers to help with rebuilding efforts.
The fire at Maurice’s Piggie Park has served as a poignant reminder of the fragility of even the most cherished landmarks. Yet, amidst the devastation, it has also unveiled the unwavering spirit of the community and its unwavering support for local institutions.
