UFC 312: Massive Fight ‘In The Works’ For Sydney Card: Report
The UFC is looking to bring a massive fight to Australia in September. According to a report from “MMA Junkie” the promotion is working on a fight between Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland for the main event of UFC 312 at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on Sept. 9. This fight has been requested by Adesanya for months now and is a compelling stylistic matchup that the organization feels will do strong PPV numbers.
While the two sides are in serious negotiations for the fight to happen, the matchup isn’t signed as of yet. However, several UFC officials, who have been informed of the news, feel that the fight will ultimately come to fruition and will become the biggest fight in UFC history. “That’s the type of matchup that is going to move the needle in the market” stated a source with inside knowledge. “It’s big-time,” another insider claimed.
Strickland is on a three-fight winning streak and recently picked up the biggest win of his career by TKOing Abus Magomedov at UFC 281. His most recent victory against Magomedov put him in a fantastic position to earn a title shot in the middleweight division.
Adesanya, who lost his middleweight championship to Alex Pereira back in November at UFC 281, is still considered the most dominant champion in the division’s history and will want a chance to reclaim his throne. The fight, if it goes down as planned, will be Adesanya’s first fight back in Australia since winning UFC 234. The UFC is already expecting UFC 312 to sell out. “This will be one of the most anticipated UFC fights in Australia’s history” an unnamed UFC official told “MMA Junkie,” with expectations that fans will pay close attention to this matchup.
